The original idea for the album was to take the improvisational approach the band used on 5150, and incorporate more keyboards, with the aim of creating more grooves. A bigger role for keyboards wasn't the reason behind the songwriting change, though. It was the songs that Eddie Van Halen had been working on that he wanted to unleash, which had been infused with many of the band's blues-inspired ideas they'd had for some time. While Van Halen had always sung bass parts, he took on more of a lead vocal role on OU812, though as he had on 5150, he wrote most of the songs himself, only sometimes bringing in Landee for some lyric ideas. Inspired by playing with his band, Van Halen also wanted to write songs that put them in their own universe.

In the end, the band achieved their goal. The album's title, OU812, was meant as a joke at the time. Van Halen meant they had eight songs on the album, and 812 was the actual street address for a local synagogue in Oakland. The title was a reflection of the eight-track format of the album, which was the first Van Halen album to have four eight-track tapes.

With the band's next album, 1987's Balance, they moved away from the mixing board and the mixdown of the previous album to the mastering process. The result was a more tape-delayed and polished sound, as opposed to the edgier sound of 5150's raw power. Van Halen was quick to point out that they weren't creating a different sound, just a different process for which they felt more comfortable.
