Game of life : How to make collision work in 2D?
For an assignment, I have to implement a 2D life, for example, using the above table.
Lives are represented as (x, y) pairs, so for example the life represented in the middle lives at coordinates (7, 7).
I am using vector2d to represent each cell.
My problem is that I have no idea how to implement collision detection in a grid, or even how to represent a life.
I think the most efficient way would be to check whether a cell is empty and only allow it to spawn if it is not.
I thought of representing cells as a grid of vector2d and each time a life is spawned to look for empty cells, but I am stuck on how to detect collisions between vector2d.
You could use a AABB for every living cell, which is just a rectangle.
You would then need to implement a bounding sphere collision system for every cell. So for every cell you compute the bounding sphere around the cell. You can do this by simply calculating the distance from every point in the cell to the nearest center of the bounding sphere.
This will tell you if that point is inside the bounding sphere of that cell. If so, that point is a point of collision. If not, the point is not a point of collision.
Once you have the list of points of collision, you can simply loop through them and check if any of them are on top of the life cell. If this is the case, you just spawn a new life.
