To improve engine response time, many cars now implement twin-turbocharging. The first to do this was the Ferrari Testarossa, followed by the Maserati Ghibli, Porsche 959 and Nissan Skyline, which were successful in demonstrating the possibility of a V-style engine's surge in performance without the lag and performance penalties of the V-type's throttle-body. The most recent version of the twin-turbo layout uses the intake and exhaust air driven by each turbocharger.
Turbo valves are adjusted with a hydraulic hose-piping through the intake manifold. A vacuum is created by a turbo-compressor on the manifold, and the hoses are controlled via switch operated hoses on the intake manifold, allowing the driver to open or close the shutters. In the more common version, the two turbo shutters are mounted on a single lever next to the brake booster, operated with the same pedal position as the brake pedal. When the turbo shutters are opened, fresh air is drawn into the intake manifold, creating a vacuum powerful enough to draw in the turbo-compressor and create pressure in the engine's cylinders. This allows the engine to be more efficient and can give greater traction if more power is wanted. Conversely, when the turbo shutters are closed, the engine's intake is blocked with a large metal shutter, therefore reducing the volume of air for combustion, and wasting fuel.\"\"
The overall chassis structure is light weight and stiff, with impact absorption and load distribution between the chassis and body at the rear of the car assisting the driver in cornering safely. The later Esprit had a new fully independent suspension, which worked well in the Turbo and helped to transfer much of the roll-off-of-the-road energy into the car.
The automatic system was dependant on the driver picking up a push button on the instrument panel to start the action. If the driver did not press the button or replaced the button with a CD player or radio the car would not change. The biggest problem with the system was if the car was started in rain or snow. An a column instrument warning light would light up and stay on. The warning light would turn off if you got out of the car and walked away.
