Renaissance music has no definite beginning. It is a period that spanned the beginning of the era of the printing press in the mid-fifteenth century to the consolidation of the Classical style in the late eighteenth century. According to its proponents, Renaissance music represents a phase in Western musical history that involved the rejection of the prevailing Medieval style by a new generation of musicians and composers who were the founders of the Baroque style. Yet, its development in the era of the printing press and the proliferation of printed music for the singing of chansons was a phenomenon unparalleled in Western musical history. Its development through the late medieval period was an organic development, evolving from the innovations of the Ars Nova. Its origins, however, are not to be found in a rejection of Medieval music, but rather in a reaction to changes in Church music that had occurred during the 13th century. The period between the twelfth and the fifteenth centuries saw a number of changes in the Church: the gradual replacement of the Roman liturgy with the Gregorian chant; the gradual development of the vernacular liturgy in place of Latin; the increasing use of organ accompaniment; the development of a musical language to accompany the text (monody, polyphony); the establishment of a musical hierarchy (i.e. one musician playing an instrument and singing, another playing a string instrument and singing); the development of a method for teaching music to large numbers of people; the establishment of a system of music education that was not confined to the rich and powerful; the development of universities and school systems; the rise of the independent towns and cities (and their townships) in Europe.
